Location Zongkhul is a spectacular cave monastery, which falls on the Padum-Kishtwar trekking route. It is situated on the rock face of the Ating George, approximately at a distance of 70 km from the Leh town. Foundation The Zongkhul monastery was founded by Naropa, a celebrated scholar-painter of the monastery. According to legends the two caves of the Gompa was a site for his solitary meditation. The footprint of Naropa are still embedded in the rock. Highlights of Zongkhul Monastery After serving as a meditation site for Naropa, the Zongkhul monastery also became the sacred site of meditation for several other Mahasiddhas of Zanskar like Dubchen Nawang Tsering, Dubchen Kunga Gyatso, Karmapa, Dzadpa Dorje, Kunga Choslag and many more. The historical site is blessed with some majestic temples, built with an exquisite architecture. Treasures of Zongkhul Monastery The beautiful monastery boasts of wonderful collection of precious artifacts and valuable images of Samvara, Buddhist texts consisting spiritual songs and biographies composed by great Mahasiddha. The most fascinating antiques include splendid murals made 300 years ago by Zhadpa Dorje. Though they are very old but are of great artistic brilliance.
