Location Spituk monastery is revered and worshiped by Buddhists from many centuries. The monastery is located approximately 8 km to south-west of Leh. It belongs to the Gelukpa order. Foundation Spituk Gompa was founded by Od-de, who also introduced the monastic community here. Od-de was the elder brother of Lha Lama Changchub Od. The monastery was named by Rinchen Zangpo, a great translator who played a vital role in propagating and promoting Buddhism in Ladakh. The management of the monastery is under the people who are the successive reincarnations of Skyabse Bakula Rinpoche. Highlight of Spituk Monastery The popular monasteries like Sankar, Stok and Saboo Gompa are considered to be the branches of Spituk. Dukhang or the assembly hall is the main attraction of the gompa housing a high throne, reserved for Dalai Lama. The Chapel features images of Tsong-kha-pa, two chief disciples of Tsong-kha-pa and Lord Buddha. Towering on a hill is a Mahakal temple, a piece of stunning architecture. The holy shrine features a fearsome statue of Vajrabhairava, which is put on display once a year in annual festival. Treasures of Spituk Monastery Spituk Gompa boasts of a fine collection of exquisite antiques such as ancient masks, thankas, antique arms and many more. Huge image of Lord Buddha and Amitayus which is about a finger high in length in the Gompa is very stunning. Gustor Festival The grand celebrations of Gustor festival enliven the Spituk monastery. It is organized from 17th to 19th days of the 11th month of the Buddhist calendar.
