Foundation Shey Gompa was built by King Deldon Namgyal in the memory his late father, Singay Namgyal. The monastery served as a royal residence for the kings of Ladakh. Large number of Chortens with different shapes and sizes built below the monastery are real retreat for the people. It demonstrates the interest of Ladakhi kings and queens who had taken a great interest in Shey. A wax bowl with a burning central flame is kept in front of Lord Buddha's image, which burns for one year before being replaced. The walls of the monastery are beautified with numerous murals of Buddha statues, representing various gestures of hand – blessing, teaching and preaching. Treasures of Shey Monastery The Shey monastery features a gold-plated copper statue of Sakyamuni Buddha, which was placed by Prince of Ladakh.
