Location Namgyal Tsemo Gompa is an important pilgrimage centre for the Buddhist devotees. The monastery is perched precariously atop the crag behind Leh Palace. It offers some of the most fascinating visuals of Leh town. Foundation The magnificent monastery represents the rich ancient culture. Namgyal Tsemo Gompa was founded by King Tashi Namgyal in the year 1430. The monastery was named after him only. Highlights of Namgyal Tsemo Gompa In the vicinity of Namgyal Gompa, there are several majestic temples. The exquisite architecture of holy shrine is testimony to glorious bygone era, which laid great emphasis on religious aspects of Buddhism. There is a time restriction to visit these temple as it only open in morning and evening for the prayers. During this time, a monk from the Sankar Gompa comes to attend the butter-lamps in front of presiding deities. Architecture enthusiasts can also visit an old fort, which lies mostly in ruins. Ramparts of the fort throws light on artistic flavor of a former ruler. The most alluring ancient temple in Gompa is Maitreya temple. Beautifully painted in red color, the monument steals the heart of every visitor for its stunning architecture. Maitreya temple is believed to be built in the fourteenth century. The holy shrine houses a huge statue of Lord Buddha and other Bodhisattvas and some wall paintings.
