Location The famous Tibetan Buddhist Gompa, Lamayuru is located on the Srinagar-Kargil-Leh in Kargil district. It is one of the largest and oldest monasteries of Ladakh, approximately 127 km west of Leh. Foundation Lamayuru monastery has an appealing charm and beauty. It dates back to 11th century and was founded by Mahasiddhacharya Naropa. The monastery belongs to Red-Hat sect of Buddhism and serves as a permanent resident to more than 150 monks. Highlights of Lamayuru Monastery Visitors can spot monks in maroon robes, silently engaged in their routine work. Mask dance festival falls annually in the 2nd and 5th months of the Tibetan lunar calendar. On these auspicious occasions, all the monks surrounds the Gompa together and conducts prayers.
