Location Situated on the banks of Indus river, Alchi Gompa is one of the most impressive monastery of Ladakh. It is located 67 km west of Leh. Foundation Alchi Gompa dates back to 1000 AD, founded by Rinchen Zangpo, a great translator. Thirty-two sculptors and wood carvers of Kashmir have made a great contribution in erecting this magnificent holy shrine. Highlights of Alchi Gompa Alchi Gompa is built in Indian style of architecture. Beautiful paintings adorning the Gompa are highly influenced by the artistic flavor of India. There are three main temples inside the monastery complex and some small holy shrines namely Sumstsag Lhakhang, Jamyang Lhakhang and many more. Treasures of Alchi Gompa Alchi monastery is cherished and revered by Buddhist pilgrims from every pocket of the world. It houses numerous graceful statues, the main one is that of Vairocana. Other images are of Lord Buddha's families and their attendant deities. The Gompa is also rich in murals belonging to the 11th and 12th centuries and some Tibetan style paintings.
